Step 1: install apache2 via MacPorts (i’m running MacPorts 1.8.2 and installed it via the dmg found on the MacPorts website)

$ sudo port install apache2

Step 2: after apache2 install was completed, set apache2 to start on startup with the command provided (this is optional)

$ sudo launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.apache2.plist

Step 3: install Passenger as a gem

$ sudo gem install -r passenger

Step 4: install the Passenger module for Apache2. when prompted with the installation process message, press ‘Enter’ to continue.

$ sudo passenger-install-apache2-module
Welcome to the Phusion Passenger Apache 2 module installer, v2.2.10.

Here's what you can expect from the installation process:
1. The Apache 2 module will be installed for you.
2. You'll learn how to configure Apache.
3. You'll learn how to deploy a Ruby on Rails application.

after the Apache2 module has been installed, you will be given instructions to edit your Apache config file (/etc/apache2/other/passenger.conf):

Please edit your Apache configuration file, and add these lines to the beginning of the file:

LoadModule passenger_module /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/passenger-2.2.10/ext/apache2/mod_passenger.so
PassengerRoot /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/passenger-2.2.10
PassengerRuby /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/bin/ruby

After you restart Apache, you are ready to deploy any number of Ruby on Rails
applications on Apache, without any further Ruby on Rails-specific
configuration!

add the above to your apache config file and restart apache with the following command: sudo apachectl restart

Step 5: Now you’re almost done. The final step is to set your Rails development environment and default directory for Passenger. I set my environment to production so Passenger since I’m temporarily using my MacPro as the production server.

$ sudo vim /etc/apache2/other/passenger.conf
# Set the default environment to development
RailsEnv production

# Which directory do you want Apache to be able to look into for projects?

Order allow,deny
Allow from all
